What is Craniosacral Therapy?
Feeling constantly unwell, or just not coping with life, can be extremely frustrating, especially if no matter what you do you don't seem to get any better. Rather than asking what happened to cause the problem in the first place, it's often more useful to ask what exactly is stopping you from getting better.
Craniosacral Therapy helps me to tune in to the body and get an idea about what's going on. I try to build a picture of past illnesses, accidents and events, as well as current habits that might be inhibiting good health. One chronic illness can have a great number of different root causes, rather then just one. I use my hands to help the body become aware of these root causes and often this is enough to radically dislodge physical or emotional problems - you can actually feel the body letting go of tensions and restrictions.
The actual mechanics of craniosacral therapy are difficult to describe and the therapy is best experienced to get an idea of how it works. Each session typically lasts an hour. You remain clothed and will usually lie face up on a treatment couch. I make light contact with your head and your feet. I describe what I am feeling.
Taking responsibility for one's own health is ultimately the most effective way towards better health and I believe craniosacral therapy is one of the best ways of kick starting this process.
Treating Babies and Children
Most problems with babies and younger children are associated with difficult births (even if it didn't seem that difficult at the time), or perhaps a difficult pregnancy. I lie the baby on a pillow on a couch, place one hand under the lower back and the other under the head. The parents are encouraged to be as close to the child as possible, to make sure he or she is reassured and soothed. A session will typically last up to 40 minutes and a series of treatments is usually needed. The treatment is extremely gentle, with almost no noticeable pressure placed on the body, but during treatment you can feel odd sensations. I do everything I can to keep babies as relaxed and happy as possible.
